Artists throughout history have delved into the intricate exploration of identity, transcending mere visual representation to capture the essence of who they are. Identity, far beyond superficial portrayals, constitutes a complex terrain for art educators to navigate.
This worksheet introduces the theme of Storytelling Quilts inspired by the paintings and quilts made by Faith Ringgold. Ringgold shared powerful stories about race and identity through her paintings and quilts, reimagining historical narratives, giving voices to African American experiences. This worksheet introduces ‘Aunt Jemima’, a stereotypical representation of African American woman and Ringgolds remimagining of her rebellion against servitude. On a slightly lighter note students are invited to create a character whose fortune changes with a lottery win. Following Ringgolds quilt design, students create their own qulit telling the story of the lottery winner whose fortunes changed.
This is 1 workshop from a set of 7 which help students investigate how artists explore the theme of Identity in their art. Whether used as standalone lessons to ignite curiosity or as launching pads for more in-depth studies, our worksheet is crafted to add depth to the exploration of identity within the art curriculum.
